Who is Selin?

Thanks so much for visiting!

I’m Selin Ozyurt, born in Istanbul, and I hold dual French and Turkish citizenship. I have a Ph.D. in Economics from Paris-Dauphine University, and since 2005, I’ve been lecturing at universities across Paris, Orléans, Bordeaux, Montpellier, and Pusan (South Korea).

My research focuses on international trade, capital flows, the diffusion of economic shocks, and macro-financial linkages, with my papers published in several academic journals. Growing up in Turkey, a country marked by multiple economic crises, I’ve always been deeply interested in economic development—what drives some nations to prosper while others stagnate? This curiosity shapes much of my work.

Currently, I’m with the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) in Washington, D.C., working in country risk, international trade, and climate risk economics. My previous roles have taken me from the European Central Bank to the French Development Agency, where I analyzed the macroeconomic and credit risks of emerging markets, to Allianz Research, where my work reached a wider audience.

In 2017, I launched this website and its accompanying X account to combat the rise of populism and misinformation—providing fact-based insights on complex economic issues while keeping things engaging and fun!

I speak four languages fluently—French, English, Turkish, and German—and can get by in Mandarin. With over 60 countries visited and four places I’ve called home, I love traveling, exploring life’s big questions, painting, and writing.

Thanks again for stopping by—let’s stay curious and keep learning together!

For French speakers, here is an interview where I tell more about my background and ‘whys’ in life.
